Howler monkeys
Sitting on the canopy,
Singing through the night
But they’re way out of key.
Oropendola
Free from the aviary
Sounding like a synth
Emitting harsh frequencies.
Mangrove fingers
Searching below the palms
Feeling for the status
Of a fading pulse.
Try to distance myself
From ancestral flaws.
Are we taught to haunt?
Or is it nature’s fault?

I claim the room
The one that’s right next to you
We’re connected together
By two tongues and a groove
Phrases in the basement
Echoes on the concrete
Scratches along the surface
Never going too deep
Everything is on fire
Singed seams through the wires
Connecting our lives
All of our friends
Some of the neighbors too
We hang out til the AM
When there’s cops on the stoop
It’s a noise violation
Our court date is set
Thumbprints in ink together
Like a painted portrait

With My Eyes Closed

Trying to find my way
Out of this house of mirrors
Stumble through the haze
Searching for fresh air
And when I do get out
I want to go far away with you
Anywhere that feels new
I could do this drive with my eyes closed
Stay between the lines when I’m feeling gold
Happens all the time
When I’m with you I don’t lose
I could do this drive with my eyes closed
It’s a straight line and we’re getting close
Right up to the edge
When I’m with you I fall through
I know I should have stayed
I wish I never came
I never left at all
Lost in a maze
Geometric shapes
A liminal space
And when I do get out
I want to go far away with you
But always be back soon

La Crosse Lane

We drove all night on the highway
Making small talk
Until we got to your place
I parked ‘round the block
Now we’re standing face to face
With the doorway as a perfect picture frame
Streetlights light the night
Only so I can see you
Streetlights shining bright
I can’t think of another use
We were both feeling brave
Walked to the park
Hand in hand, sweaty palms
In the pitch dark
Hanging on creaky chains
I fell in love across La Crosse Lane
